Caribou Coffee - A Unique Taste
Caribou Coffee has given coffee lovers of the world a choice when it comes to their favorite hot beverage.
Second only behind that other coffee house (which shall remain nameless), the product is of a high quality.
The company was conceived in 1990, by John and Kim Puckett, while on their honeymoon to Alaska’s Denali National Park.
The first Caribou Coffee shop was opened in 1992 and went through several years of mixed successes and failures. The Puckett’s then sold controlling interest to a company from Georgia called Arcapita, which still holds that interest today.
Controversy arose in 1991 when the First Islamic Investment Bank acquired a major stake in Arcapita. This bank is based in Bahrain and was chaired by Sheik Yusuf Al-Qaradawi. This was post 9-11 and Qaradawi’s affiliations were in question.
To allow the company to move forward, Sheik Qaradawi stepped down that year and the company has flourished since.
There are now more than 460 stores across 18 states and the District of Columbia in the USA. The main manufacturing facility remains in the Minneapolis area and is publicly traded on the NYSE as of September 2005.
Their offerings of coffee, tea and baked products have been expanded to offer fruit smoothies as well as their trademark Snowdrift drinks.
To go along with the coffee are delicious baked goods like muffins, bagels, cookies and popovers. Truly a full coffee shop experience that will not be forgotten soon.
Most stores also offer branded clothing and other accessories as well.
So you can enjoy their coffee any time, the coffee is available for sale as beans or fresh ground.
To give you an idea how good these drinks are, a non-biased, blind taste test was performed in 2004 by Consumer reports between 41 different Colombian and Kona coffees. Caribou Coffee was placed at #1 across the board. Interestingly, the main competitor (Starbucks) came in 4th behind Eight O’clock and Dunkin Donuts. Even Seattle’s Best placed behind these brands.
So if you are looking for a good tasting coffee or coffee product, this is obviously the one to look for. The flavor has been verified in anonymous taste testing and the shops are expanding all the time.
They are also working with the Rainforest Alliance to create an environmentally “green” product. The result is an award winning, environmentally friendly, great tasting and unique cup of coffee.
Caribou Coffee is a major presence in the coffee shop scene. If you happen to pass by one in your travels, stop in and see what a quality, award winner tastes like.
